PSYCHOLOGY, HEALTH & WELL-BEING

Charlie-Jade is completing an MSc Performance Science at the Royal College of Music where her research areas are in the fields of performance psychology, positive psychology, and health and well-being of performing artists. Her research focusses specifically on the relationship between the voice, mind, and body, as well as intervention practices for optimising performers health and well-being.

Research across health promotion in the performing arts illustrates that our health and well-being are imperative to achieving peak performance. This research also illustrates the many barriers that prevent the ability for performers to maintain their health and well-being, both within training as well as in the profession. The Practice by Charlie-Jade gives performing artists the opportunity to enrich their own understanding of health and well-being, and ensure, as research suggests, that the delivery of interventions are grounded in evidence and meet the needs of those working in this unique environment.

The Practice by Charlie-Jade offers psychological performance coaching which takes a collaborative solution-focused approach, supporting you in clarifying and setting goals helping you to achieve short-term or long-term plans, and increasing your ability to perform under pressure. Coaching will help you to increase your self-confidence and self-awareness while reducing feelings of stress and overwhelm.

In addition, The Practice by Charlie-Jade collaborates with leading clinical practitioners working in the performing arts, including physiotherapists, psychologists, nutritionists, osteopaths, laryngologists, and speech and language therapists.

AT THE PRACTICE

“My session with Charlie-Jade helped me completely reevaluate how I approach my training and my relationship with myself as a performer. As somebody who has read countless books to help with this, I was shocked at how much I learned about myself in just one session. This has given me tools to move forward in my journey not only as a performer, but also as a person in everyday life who has perfectionistic tendencies.”

— MUSICAL THEATRE PERFORMER

From time to time, it is not uncommon for professional voice users to experience voice problems, and require specialist support and assessment from a range of voice-specialist practitioners. These practitioners may include a laryngologist, speech-language therapist, a performance specialist physiotherapist or osteopath, as well as a psychologist. You know your voice better than anyone, if you feel something is not right, please reach out. Although we will not provide you with a clinical assessment (The Practice is NOT a voice clinic), we are able to guide you in being referred to specialist NHS voice clinics where necessary, as well as performance specialist physiotherapists, osteopaths and psychologists who can, and will support you on your vocal health journey - whichever route that may go down.
